An outstanding example is Beaulieu Vineyards, whose history dates back to 1900, when Georges de Latour’s wife first saw the four-acre ranch that would become their vineyard and named it “beau lieu,” or “beautiful place.”
The winery survived Prohibition by making sacramental wine; after Prohibition’s repeal, Latour invested in research—in France and at home—and began producing Napa’s first “cult” Cabernet, the “Private Reserve,” which remains in production to this day! Famed winemaker André Tchelistcheff, who trained in France before joining Beaulieu, established the winery’s current reputation for meticulous craftsmanship and innovation. Current winemaker Jeffrey Stambor continues this commitment, and even worked with Tchelistcheff to create the Maestro collection in his honor. Their contributions to Napa Valley winemaking have had a lasting influence, and a taste of Beaulieu wines offers a glimpse into both the past and future of California wine country.
